Initiation Horror Stories

We’ve mentioned the club system, now let’s spill the beans on the initiation rituals. Did it go from bad to worse from the 50′s to the 80′s?

All I remember was a cold night at Ellenberger and being doused in God knows what and a wad of minced garlic in my armpit. Oh, and I remember the smell!

Funny Little Stories…

My father went to Howe. One day he told me he was at the football field and Mr. Stirling walked by and some lady got all excited and told her friends, “There goes the man this stadium is named after! T. C. Hornet!”

Did You Cut Class? How Did You Do It?

The closest I ever came to cutting class was hanging out with Mr. Trinkle (RIP) many afternoons during my senior year. He was such a dear man. Anyway, I was sure I would get caught because that was just my luck and I can’t lie my way out of a paper bag.  Who wanted to lie to Mrs. McClellan, anyway? What’s your story?

Let’s Build a “Prom” Album!

Certainly you never ate a Turley before prom, at least I hope not!

Let’s see how many formal dance pics we can collect from “back in the day.” Let’s start a photo album album we can access from both the Turley blog and Facebook group.

If you have access to a scanner, scan your pictures at 300 dpi (if possible) and crop them and save them to .jpg format. If you don’t have access to a scanner you might check into Staples or Office Depot services.

For now, you can send them in an e-mail them to me at lori.smith.indy@comcast.net. Please include the name and year of the event and the names of the people in each picture and include any comments that you would like to have posted.  If I can figure out a way to let you upload them yourself, I will definitely let you know!

Who Was Your Favorite?

So, who was your favorite teacher/administrator/custodian/secretary general employee at Howe and why? Such a mundane question but I bet there are some surprising answers out there. And by the way, did you ever venture into the Teacher’s Lounge?

Pass the Pledge, Please?

For decades social clubs were celebrated and desecrated. They played a unique role in the Howe social scheme.

What were their names? Where did the names come from? What were the different clubs known for? Did you pledge? What did you have to do? What did you make your pledges do?

Howe Band European Tour Marks 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago, on August 3, 1979, at 2:00 PM, Howe band director Hal Meurer lead 121 Howe band members, Hornet Honeys, assistants, parents, and chaperons on a journey they would never forget. The Hornets rode and marched half way across Europe to their ultimate destination: the annual World Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. Although they did not win the contest, that group of kids never played better than during that performance.

So, here’s a special “Turley Manhattan” to Mr. Meurer (RIP) for making the world a little smaller for a hand-full of Hornets.
