Howe Band European Tour Marks 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago, on August 3, 1979, at 2:00 PM, Howe band director Hal Meurer lead 121 Howe band members, Hornet Honeys, assistants, parents, and chaperons on a journey they would never forget. The Hornets rode and marched half way across Europe to their ultimate destination: the annual World Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. Although they did not win the contest, that group of kids never played better than during that performance.

So, here’s a special “Turley Manhattan” to Mr. Meurer (RIP) for making the world a little smaller for a hand-full of Hornets.

What do you remember about the trip to Europe?

I recall the bus driver getting lost in Paris trying to find our hotel. Funny thing is, we ended up in the “red light” district, surrounded by hookers, drug dealers and winos…quite the experience for a bunch of conservative Hoosier kids, hahaha…

I actually kept a diary of what I did on that trip. It is in the barn with some other memorabilia from the trip. I am kind of a pact rat and I will do something with that stuff someday. ( I gave my little Icelandic wooden figure that i got in Iceland to my future Wife as a present when I was in college.)
